From cutting-edge architecture incorporating the latest building technologies, to much loved favourites given a modern makeover, the Leeds Architecture Awards 2009 will celebrate the design excellence of the city's newest buildings as well as some of its oldest.
A new category has been introduced for 2009 focusing on 'Temporary Works'. It will recognise the way developers and regeneration professionals are responding to difficult times by bringing forward innovative solutions and temporary uses for vacant development sites.
The categories for 2009 are:
New Building
Any new building can be entered with a particular focus on how the building relates to its surroundings, the external appearance of the building and sustainable and innovative solutions.
Altered Building
Any building that has been extended or altered. Judges will take particular interest in the historical context.
Conserved Building
This category includes restoration projects or the removal of unsightly features, returning buildings to their former glory.
Public Realm & Landscape
Any schemes that enhances the public spaces around a development, from lighting to public art and landscaped squares.
Temporary Works
Innovative temporary solutions to vacant sites scheduled for development.
